One of the leading causes of emergency room visits for senior citizens is from injuries sustained from a slip or fall accident. Though most seniors survive the resulting fall injuries, fear of another fall or the after effects of a fall can force some seniors to curtail activities or end their independent lifestyle. In addition to the physical, mental and emotional trauma the senior may suffer, the annual medical costs of treating such injuries is in the billions. But there are things that can be done to ensure a safer living environment for seniors, which could prevent or drastically reduce the occurrence of falls with the implementation of a few safety measures. Here are few examples for bathtub area:

Bathtub and toilet assistance measures

To assist in sitting, standing and rising install grab bars around the walls and on the bathtub, and next to the toilet.

Inside bathtub safety

Add non-skid bath mats or appliqués to bathtub or shower floor.

Get rid of bar soap and install soap and shampoo dispenser.

Add a bath or shower seat.

Install hand held shower head.

Bathroom floor safety

Use non-skid floor mats and get rid of area rugs.

To provide small assistance with safety of our low-income senior citizens living at home, Able People Foundation will provide limited quantities of Bathtub Transfer Benches for FREE to our community with mobility limitation. Bathtub Transfer Benches could help those who have difficulty stepping over bathtub walls. The bathtub transfer benches are designed to be placed half inside the bathtub and half outside the bathtub for increased security while transferring in and out of the bathtub or shower. Reversible backrest snaps in and out to accommodate right or left transfers.

To qualify, you must:

A. Complete and send attached application.
B. Must be living at home not at a care facility.
C. Receive less than $1,700.00 monthly. “Proof of income required”.
D.Live in Bay area, thereby giving you access to our giving location for setup and pickup.
E. Your insurance will not pay for a bathtub transfer bench.

How it works:

a. You must apply for Free Bathtub Transfer Bench by sending us your application.
b. A committee will review your application.
c. We will mail you a letter about our review and decision.
d. If approved, our letter will include date, day, and location within Santa Clara County to go and receive your Gift of Mobility of Free Bathtub Transfer Bench.
